Political Struggle

Among the sections of the old Fellowship Indy Mission Statement is the section “Politics: We are not politically oriented, though it would be naive not to realize that ours is a civil rights struggle. Many of our members are leaders in the gay community.”

The very fact that the LGBT+ community has made great progress since Stonewall, has motivated much of the political “right” to counter-attack. Recently, it is by removing gay-oriented books from school and public libraries, banning elementary teachers from mentioning queer families & lifestyles, and banning trans kids from sports. As we learned from the 2018 catastrophe of Mike Pense’s RFRA law, Indiana’s politicians are disproportionately more conservative than the electorate.

Frighteningly, the conservatives have played a better game of national politics by filling 6 Supreme Court seats with conservative justices. The leaked draft of the Rowe v. Wade abortion decision shows their willingness to do a 180-degree turn. Although as a gay men’s organization we are slightly impacted by this likely imminent change, nevertheless, several other pro-gay Supreme Court rulings are subject to similar reversal. A number of our members were able to get married due to the 5-4 Obergerfell decision. The Romer v. Evans decision stopped Colorado from passing laws that discriminated against gays. Lawrence v. Texas eliminated sodomy laws. US v. Windsor struck down the so-called Defense of Marriage Act defining marriage as only between one man and one woman. Masterpiece Cakeshop dealt with a business’s ability to not serve gay people based on religious motivations.

We have a lot at stake. Each of us is called to do something. Ours is a civil rights struggle!
